The nonlinear aeroelastic response of a two-degree-of-freedom airfoil with freeplay and cubic nonlinearities in supersonic flows is investigated. The second-order piston theory is used to analyze a double-wedge airfoil. Then, the fold bifurcation and the amplitude jump phenomenon are detected by the averaging method and the multi-variable Floquet theory. The analytical results are further verified by numerical simulations. Finally, the influence of the freeplay parameters on the aeroelastic response is analyzed in detail.

This paper analytically investigates the unsteady peristaltic transport of the Maxwell fluid in a finite tube. The walls of the tube are subjected to the contraction waves that do not cross the stationary boundaries. The analysis is carried out by a long wavelength approximation in the non-dimensional form. The expressions for the axial and radial velocities are derived. The pressures across the wavelength and the tubelength are also estimated. The reflux phenomenon is discussed, which culminates into the determination of the reflux limit. Mathematical formulations are physically interpreted
for the flow of masticated food materials such as bread and white eggs in the oesophagus. It is revealed that the Maxwell fluids are favorable to flow in the oesophagus as compared with the Newtonian fluids. This endorses the experimental finding of Takahashi et al. (Takahashi, T., Ogoshi, H., Miyamoto, K., and Yao, M. L. Viscoelastic properties of commercial plain yoghurts and trial foods for swallowing disorders. Rheology, 27, 169–172 (1999)). It is further revealed that the relaxation time does not affect the shear stress and the reflux limit. It is found that the pressure peaks are identical in the integral case while different in the non-integral case.

In this study, the effects of magnetic field and nanoparticle on the Jeffery-Hamel flow are studied using a powerful analytical method called the Adomian decomposition method (ADM). The traditional Navier-Stokes equation of fluid mechanics and Maxwell’s electromagnetism governing equations are reduced to nonlinear ordinary differential equations to model the problem. The obtained results are well agreed with that of the Runge-Kutta method. The present plots confirm that the method has high accuracy for different α, Ha, and Re numbers. The flow field inside the divergent channel is studied for various values of Hartmann number and angle of channel. The effect of nanoparticle volume fraction in the absence of magnetic field is investigated.

The shock tube experiments of inclined air/SF6 interface instability under the shock wave with the Mach numbers 1.23 and 1.41 are conducted. The numerical simulation is done with the parallel algorithm and the multi-viscous-fluid and turbulence (MVFT) code of the large-eddy simulation (LES). The developing process of the interface accelerated by the shock wave is reproduced by the simulations. The complex wave structures, e.g., the propagation, refraction, and reflection of the shock wave, are clearly revealed in the flows. The simulated evolving images of the interface are consistent with the experimental ones. The simulated width of the turbulent mixing zone (TMZ) and the displacements of the bubble and the spike also agree well with the experimental data. Also, the reliability and effectiveness of the MVFT in simulating the problem of interface instability are validated. The more energies are injected into the TMZ when the shock wave has a larger Mach number. Therefore, the perturbed interface develops faster.

A numerical study is carried out for the axisymmetric steady laminar incompressible flow of an electrically conducting micropolar fluid between two infinite parallel porous disks with the constant uniform injection through the surface of the disks. The fluid is subjected to an external transverse magnetic field. The governing nonlinear equations of motion are transformed into a dimensionless form through von Karman’s similarity transformation. An algorithm based on a finite difference scheme is used to solve the reduced coupled ordinary differential equations under associated boundary conditions. The effects of the Reynolds number, the magnetic parameter, the micropolar parameter, and the Prandtl number on the flow velocity and temperature distributions are discussed. The results agree well with those of the previously published work for special cases. The investigation predicts that the heat transfer rate at the surfaces of the disks increases with the increases in the Reynolds number, the magnetic parameter, and the Prandtl number. The shear stresses decrease with the increase in the injection while increase with the increase in the applied magnetic field. The shear stress factor is lower for micropolar fluids than for Newtonian fluids, which may be beneficial in the flow and thermal control in the polymeric processing.

The high-order implicit finite difference schemes for solving the fractionalorder Stokes’ first problem for a heated generalized second grade fluid with the Dirichlet boundary condition and the initial condition are given. The stability, solvability, and convergence of the numerical scheme are discussed via the Fourier analysis and the matrix analysis methods. An improved implicit scheme is also obtained. Finally, two numerical examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the mentioned schemes.

This paper presents a combined application of the finite element method (FEM) and the differential quadrature method (DQM) to vibration and buckling problems of rectangular plates. The proposed scheme combines the geometry flexibility of the FEM and the high accuracy and efficiency of the DQM. The accuracy of the present method is demonstrated by comparing the obtained results with those available in the literature. It is shown that highly accurate results can be obtained by using a small number of finite elements and DQM sample points. The proposed method is suitable for the problems considered due to its simplicity and potential for further development.

An integrated fluid-thermal-structural analysis approach is presented. In this approach, the heat conduction in a solid is coupled with the heat convection in the viscous flow of the fluid resulting in the thermal stress in the solid. The fractional four-step finite element method and the streamline upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) method are used to analyze the viscous thermal flow in the fluid. Analyses of the heat transfer and the thermal stress in the solid are performed by the Galerkin method. The second-order semiimplicit Crank-Nicolson scheme is used for the time integration. The resulting nonlinear equations are linearized to improve the computational efficiency. The integrated analysis method uses a three-node triangular element with equal-order interpolation functions for the fluid velocity components, the pressure, the temperature, and the solid displacements to simplify the overall finite element formulation. The main advantage of the present method is to consistently couple the heat transfer along the fluid-solid interface. Results of several tested problems show effectiveness of the present finite element method, which provides insight into the integrated fluid-thermal-structural interaction phenomena.

Two explicit expressions of the stress concentration factor for a tension finite-width strip with a central elliptical hole and an eccentric elliptical hole, respectively, are formulated by using a semi-analytical and semi-empirical method. Accuracy of the results obtained from these expressions is better, and application scope is wider, than the results of Durelli’s photo-elastic experiment and Isida’s formula. When eccentricity of the elliptical hole is within a certain range, the error is less than 8%. Based on the relation between the stress concentration factor and the stress intensity factor, a stress intensity factor expression for tension strips with a center or an eccentric crack is derived with the obtained stress concentration factor expressions. Compared with the existing formulae and the finite element analysis, this stress intensity factor expression also has sufficient accuracy.

The Dirichlet initial-boundary value problem of a compressible reactive gas model equation with a nonlocal nonlinear source term is investigated. Under certain conditions, it can be proven that the blow-up rate is uniform in all compact subsets of the domain, and the blow-up rate is irrelative to the exponent of the diffusion term, however, relative to the exponent of the nonlocal nonlinear source.
